  FAQ 3   -   MAP PROJECTIONS
Q.Can Maprender3D project a map in a world orthographic projection (or any other projection)?
A.MapRender 3D can project a World Orthographic (or as many as 28 different projections) - there are two software components to the MapRender3D package that enable you to do this:

Convert - which takes the seamless world database (supplied on disc one) and converts it to your specified projection and outputs a DEM format file. Note that Convert only outputs DEM format.

MapRender3D - takes in the DEM file from Convert (or any other DEM source, and many other formats) and projects it in a bitmap rendering which you can save and use in other graphics applications.

Q.For an orthographic global display, we get a partial orthographic image but not the whole globe? (keep getting "unable to project, check parameters" messages.
A. You get the error message mentioned if you do not enter the appropriate East and West extents. So if you are centering the DEM on 0,0 the the East will be -90º and West 90º - set North 90º and South -90º.

Q.For a non-central world map rendering, i.e. not based on zero degree longitude, the Convert Utility is unable to output the DEM.
A. If you are centering the DEM on say 50º East, enter -50 in the central meridian under the main world map. Then enter the West and East parameters - in our example, enter -130 for the Western value, and -130 for the Eastern value. Set North 90º and South -90º. You will note that the dimensions for the full world are displayed. Now it is necessary to back off one of the Eastern or Western values. We can do this by reducing the width by a small amount, say one point. Adjust the East value to 130.1 then try -130.2 enough to reduce the dimension width by the smallest increment. In a 10 km PSB, the width value is reduced from 4,320 to 4,319 - this is sufficient to allow the extraction to take place successfully.

Q.Can MapRender3D output a user defined region as DEM without projection as a raw file?
A.To output a DEM without the data being projected, simply use the 'No projection' option in MapRender Convert. However, this is in DEM and not RAW format.

Q.Some MapRender3D Convert projections may be described differently in other mapping software applications....
A.Azimuthal covers many projections, however it is most likely to be Azimuthal Equidistant which may be designated as Equidistant. General Vertical Near Side Perspective is the equivalent of Perspective in the Azimuthal group of projections. Transverse Mercator is Mercator with Projection Center rotated 90° around the center of the projection.
